Another Half Marathon…

Well, it’s pretty much official.  My sister and the rest of my ‘Chix’ teammates have pretty much convinced me to do the Lewiston Half Marathon on September 22nd.  Just ONE WEEK before my best friend’s wedding.  YIKES!  I looked it up and it’s a beautiful and very scenic course.  I know that if I have a few friends that will be there I am more likely to be pushed harder and take training more seriously.  I took a look at Hal Higden’s Novice 2 – 12 week program and I’ve tweaked it a bit to fit my needs more.

SAT: Because the race is on Saturday, I plan on keeping my distance days on Saturday. I try to keep these runs a little more flat, but most times hills are involved – it’s hard to run around town and not face hills.
SUN: Sundays are for some sort of cross training – doesn’t matter if it’s swimming, rollerblading, tennis, biking, water skiing, anything that keeps my body in motion and not just sitting on my ass ‘”recovering”.
MON: Monday’s I will take full advantage of being lazy and instead of an off day, I want to use my foam roller or just get a good stretch in. Probably a leisurely walk at night too.
TUES: I will most likely be doing this workout at the track. I’m going to try to incorporate 12 laps with 12 different total body movements that mimic a lift at the gym (pushups, chair dips, lunges, stairs, squats, etc.)
WED: I’ll head out for a run, most likely through the park to get in some hills.
THURS: Just like Tuesday, I will most likely be doing this workout at the track. I’m going to try to incorporate 12 laps with 12 different total body movements that mimic a lift at the gym (pushups, chair dips, stairs, squats, etc.)
FRI: Again, like Monday this is supposed to be more of an off day, so I’m thinking I will do a light form of yoga that is allot of stretching and prepping for Saturday’s longer run. Besides, never have I ever wanted to work out on a Friday. Ever.
REPEAT x 11.

The last (and only) time I ran a half marathon was in Rochester with one of my great roommates from college, Mel.  Here are a few of my favorite photos from the day..

early morning, pre race jitters

Necessary Detox

I have had such a great icfh alumni reunion weekend, I cannot even begin to explain! I got home last night around 6 pm, had dinner with the rents and found myself in bed around 9. No lies. I had zero ambition to upload any photos from my camera so I will leave you with a quick collage from some of my weekend iPhone shots. More to come later!

Tiger of the Game

Work has kept me absolutely swamped…and I LOVE IT!!  Who on earth would have ever believed that I would be saying that.  After work I went to my gym and did day 58 of my 12 week program and let me tell you, phase 3 is NO joke.  After I finished my work out I headed over to another gym and did day 8 of Sarah’s 12 week program.   She’s loving it as much as I am.

Oh I almost forgot!!  So this weekend I took Marc out on our surprise date night.  The plan was originally dinner at PF Changs and rock climbing (at the same place Kate and I went to a few weeks back…).  Like I said, those were my orginal plans.  Turns out PF Chang’s is way more popular then I thought and our wait was about an hour and a half! We put our names in and walked around the mall for a while.  We spent a majority of the time in Dick’s Sporting Goods, more specifically the outdoor section and we came up with all sorts of things ‘we just had to have’.  Thankfully we walked out of there empty handed…

Finally we were seated for dinner and my typical gluten free Ginger Chicken with Broccoli was replaced with another chicken dish that featured citrus sauce.. This meal wasn’t gluten free so I only ate a little bit just in case it made my tummy hurt and it was beyond amazing!  I LOVED it!  It isn’t on the menu just yet.. I think it’s coming out next month and I would highly recommend it!

We were about half way through dinner when we started talking about altering our post dinner plans… neither of us really wanted to drive a half an hour and exert any energy so we looked up movie times for the mall we were at and decided we would catch the next show time for Project X.  I let marc pick whatever he wanted to see because the date was planned for him.

I hadnt seen any previews for this movie so I had no idea what I was in for.  This movie was so funny, both Marc and I were laughing out loud several times.  Totally random movie, but had us giggling!  All in all it was a great date night 🙂  SUCCESS!!

Moment Monday

(Yours truly is wearing #4) This picture is from my senior year in highschool.  My coach had a tradition that after every game she would hand out something tiger related (the Akron Tigers is our school FYI) to a player who stuck out during the game.  Whether they did something right they have been working on, doing a new trick, acting selfless, anything.  It was always an honor to receive the tiger.   This game in particular we did a little something different… During half time we all held hands and ran over to a little girl on the sidelines (a daughter of one of our PE teachers who was battling cancer who loved field hockey and was just too sweet for words) and gave her the game tiger.

Oddly enough, Marc’s dad was at this game taking pictures for us and he captured this moment.  Totally unplanned and still to this day makes me so happy.  This still remains one of my favorite photographs from highschool and I had this in every single on of my rooms during college.  It constantly reminds me how precious life is and how a small gesture can make such an impact to someone.

All were touched by our act that afternoon.  It makes me so happy just thinking about it 🙂

Question of the Day – Does your significant other have any favorite restaurants you frequently visit? Does he ever! Ted’s, TGIFridays, PF Chang’s, Jim’s Steakout Pano’s, JP Bullfeather .. all of which I have learned to love over the years 😉

How To Show You Are Sorry

As most of you know I played field hockey at a DIII school. When I was a freshman I played and even started in a few games, as a new collegent player I was pretty proud of myself for that accomplishment. As proud as I was of myself I was also scared crapless about making mistakes. I would get in a game and fear making a mistake and getting subbed out. I talked to one of mcares mates about my playing and explained my hear to her. That’s when I received some of my best field hockey related advice ever. She shared with me that mistakes are always going to happen all that matters is how I reacted to ten and if I did anything to become a better player when I faced that scenario in the future. As a slightly ocd person afraid of disappointing a person (let alone an entire team) it took me a while to get into the mind frame of “mistakes are okay as long as I learn from them”. It took me until about half way through the season to not fear making mistakes. By my junior year I was able to start the game and after my first mistake I didn’t give it another thought.
The entire point of that story, is that I’ve learned that my field hockey advice also applies to real life. I didn’t set an alarm last night an I didn’t wake up until 850. I made my first mistake and was late by an hour. Lesson learned, I’m going to have a separate real alarm clock besides my phone.

What I Ate Wednesday
Well I did it again. I was running late today and it totally threw me off the entire day. I didn’t take any photos of what I ate. Basically I ate whatever I had at work and drank a lot of water and tea.

Instead I’m going to blog about a recipe I made for my sister as an “I’m sorry your cat died” apology. Unfortunately my sister had to put her cat Molly down yesterday. Kristen adopted her from the SPCA and a previous abusive home about a year ago. She was overweight and skiddish. Poor Molly had some intestinal issues and no matter what the vet did it just wasn’t going to make Molly any better. Kristen texted me yesterday about it and within hours I was in the kitchen making her some of her favorite cookies….

No Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies

Mix and bring the following to a boil..

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 2 cups sugar
then add:
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 tsp vinalla
  • 3 cups oatmeal

beat until thick and drop by teaspoon on waxed paper

By the end they should look a little something like this…

Question of the day – what are your favorite cookies to receive from someone else? I am a fan of my aunts chocolate chip cookies. I’m not sure why she puts in them (crack maybe?) but they are SO good and I devour them whenever they are around.

Get Me Outta Here

Allot happened the last few days of work last week which meant I spent allot of my weekend doing work at home. Thankfully the boy was working on his taxes so we spent allot of time next to one another both doing work this weekend.

Unfortunately buffalo has once again surprised us and that 80 degree weather I was loving last week has chilled to around 35 degrees today. Brrrr!

My mom dad and I headed out after work to a defensive drivers course to all individually reduce our insurance by 10%. Unfortunately that meant spending 5 hours sitting and watching outdated videos. I’m talking cassette player days here people!! It wasn’t even 45 minutes in when my body was screaming “get me outta here!!!”. I not only missed the gym today, I spent 8ish hours sitting at work and 5ish hours sitting for that course. Oh and I ate an Iced Oatmeal Raisin Luna bar for dinner. Real healthy.

Moment Monday

20120326-224309.jpg

This is snap shot that was taken after a tough game in college. I got off the field and was immediately embarrassed by my dad. More than anything in that moment I needed that. I love this picture because it captures the nature of my dad. A big tough guy with a soft spot for his children and always trying to comfort us and cheer us up. Even if it’s a sarcastic comment that probably made me take a jab at him, it completely took my mind off of any issues I had prior to that embrace. I an thankful every single day for my family, especially my parents. They mean the world to me.

Question of the Day – what is the wether like in your area? Is it typical weather? Dang you mother nature for tricking me into thinking you’d stay warm for a while. Last week I was in a dress. Today…. I wore my winter jacket.

It’s Official!

1. Guess who got a 95% on her Field Hockey Officiating test. This girl riiiigggghhhhtttt here 🙂 When I got home last night, I found this gem hanging on my door frame. My dad used to be a ref for wrestling and he’s held onto his top ever since. Glad to know I fit into a shirt that my dad wore in his late 20s. Guess I should stop stuffing my face all the time huh?!

I've got a name tag and everything 😉 Thanks Dad!

Of course I had to try it on.

2. I got this little gem in the mail today from Alyse at Fit Approach as part of the Foodie Penpals program I took part in this month.. more on that in a week or two 🙂

Open me, open me, open me.

3. I discovered this picture on Twitter… How come I never looked this good playing hockey?

What? This isn't attractive? Point proven.

4. Besides the surprise package.. this arrived on my doorstep.

Is it March 23rd yet?

5. Tomorrow is Friday, and for the first time in a while I don’t want to rush through it to get to the weekend. Looks like I’m enjoying my new job a little bit more then I thought 🙂 And for that, I’m thankful.

Question of the Day – Did you use to play a sport? Are you still involved in that sport? My main sport was field hockey. I’ve played for like 12 years, traveled all over the place with my travel team and played in college. I don’t have the time to commit to coach a fall team, so I was forced persuaded to be an official so I can still be involved in the sport. We’ll see where this takes me…

…Another One Opens

Well today was the day, I started my new job!  I had quite a few people text me after my When One Door Closespost and thankfully I had a lots of support 🙂 Overall my day went pretty smooth and since I’ve interned there before it was kind of like slipping into a warm and familiar jacket.  I don’t want to go into too much detail but I’m really happy with how things have turned out!  I even snapped a ‘first day at my new job photo..

Not a great photo, but you get the point!

ps.  ONE MORE NIGHT UNTIL I AM OFFICIALLY AN OFFICIAL!! Thank the lord.

Moment Monday

This picture is from a hike I took with my family after one of my field hockey games.  From left to right – Uncle Eric, Dad, Mom, myself, Rachel (my cousin), Uncle Tim and Aunt Andie.  My senior year I had the pleasure of having my little cousin Rachie at school with me.  We grew up about 3 hours apart (me Buffalo, Rach Syracuse) and have recently only seen one another at major holidays and when she came to visit me at school my sophomore and junior year.  Even though we were both at the same school, it was unusual to see her randomly on campus.  Although, we did have lunch together 2 or 3 times a week while we were both at school 🙂 ps, it’s amazing to have family members close by when you are away from everything you were once used to.

This particular weekend we headed to Robert H. Treman State Park (about a 10 minute drive from our campus) and hiked the top part to take a ‘family photo’. <– my dad has 5 brothers in total so clearly we were missing a few 😉 The park itself is beautiful.  I’ve hiked those trails countless times… as part of our preseason conditioning and team bonding, with my mom, with my boyfriend, with both of my parents, with Swink, Annie and some of my roommates… and sometimes I went by myself just to get away for an hour or two and to take pictures.  Whenever I go back to visit Ithaca I try to get out and hike some of my favorite trails!

Question of the Day – What is the dress code at your place of employment?  At my old job we had to dress pretty professional and I bought all of these ‘big girl clothes’ while at my current job it is much more relaxed.  I’m going to try to find a balance so I don’t stick out like a sore thumb in my professional clothes while also looking as nice as possible on those days where I just don’t feel like getting out of bed.  Comeon – we all have them! 😉

Vegetable Eatin’ Kitty

So as much as I’d like to say that I was productive today, I really wasn’t.  I mean I did a few things, unload the dishwasher, paid a bill and college loan, lunch with a former coworker at Chipotle, an arms workout, a run outside and hill repeats with mom.  So I guess after I just typed all that I suppose I have done more than I originally thought I did. Whoops!

Tonight I went to my second ‘class’ to become a certified official for field hockey.  I have 3 classes and an evaluation left.  It’s weird – I’ve played field hockey for at least 11 or so years and I never knew just how many things a ref has to know.  I originally thought that I would be more interested in being a coach, however I don’t have the time to commit to a team just right now.  I figure I’ll get my certification, try out a modified game or two and maybe a tournament here and there and make a few bucks and see what I want to do from there.. who knows.

What I Ate Wednesday

Breakfast started with a smoothie that included a cup unsweetened almond breeze, a handful of spinach, a few handfuls of frozen strawberries, a tablespoon of flaxseed and a a few pinches of chia seeds.

End Result + Green Grapes

A few hours later I headed to Chipotle for lunch and got a salad bowl with lettuce, black beans, brown rice, corn salsa, cheese, sour cream on the side and chips.

After the gym I had a protein shake and some greek yogurt with some granola in it (not pictured).

After hill sprints and a brisk walk with my mom I came home and had the rest of my salad from lunch and a side of peas.  I love peas.  And broccoli. I like my green veggies 🙂  As per usual, I had a little begger during dinner..

"I'm watching you.."

"This isn't funny. I really want some."

"Thank you for the pea. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

What can I say? I’m a sucker..and she looks cute!  She is such a creeper sometimes.  I’ll just be minding my own business and I’ll catch her just looking at me.  I’ll have to snap some photos and post them to prove it.

At the meeting tonight I brought some snacks with me.. I love me some chocolate and it’s a bonus if dark chocolate because then I tell myself it’s good for me 😉

Raisins, iced oatmeal luna bar & dark chocolate.

Question of the Day – Have you ever had or know an animal that has ‘changed’ personalities?  I swear, ever since my dog died Hunter has become a different cat completely.  She used to be so timid and quiet, now she ‘talks’ all the time and begs like a dog!  She will eat just about anything we give her.  Even her vegetables! Good girl hunter 🙂
